acid (pegasus)

the acid on your tongue
tastes as sweet
as the cigarettes on your lips

the acid finds its mark
spat into my face
spat onto my flesh
does its work
and decay begins

is this how you show
how strong
how heartfelt
how treacherous
when your chest cracks wide
this is what's inside

your passion
turned to acid
burns compassion
and reveals
the conditions underneath
sinews of fear
a spiderweb of frailties
I see the cage where I'm to be kept
and put to work

and so we stand
you split open and foaming
me scalded, scarred for life

what do you want?

and suddenly I burst
I crumble
dust for tears
my innards liquefy and drain
the acid does its work
the acid does its work
and the light behind my eyes
goes out
